Frequently asked questions
What happens when the end time is before the start time?
In clock mode the end is treated as the next day, so 22:00 → 02:30 gives 4:30:00 — the standard convention for shifts and trips that cross midnight. In date-time mode both moments are absolute, so an end before the start is reported as an error instead of a silent negative.
What outputs does the calculator show?
The same duration three ways: hours:minutes:seconds (2:45:00), total minutes (165) and total seconds (9,900), for the 09:30 to 12:15 example. The totals are what payroll systems and time-tracking sheets usually ask for.
How is the hourly-rate amount calculated?
Earnings = duration in hours × hourly rate, so 2:45:00 at 25 per hour is 2.75 × 25 = 68.75. The rate is optional; leave it empty and the tool simply shows the duration.
Does it handle time zones and daylight saving time?
No. The calculator does wall-clock arithmetic on the times you enter and deliberately ignores zones and DST transitions, which keeps the result predictable for shifts, timers and logs. For absolute spans across DST boundaries, verify separately.
