Pace Calculator

This free pace calculator answers the two questions every runner asks: "what pace was that?" and "what finish time does this pace give me?".

Format H:MM:SS or MM:SS, e.g. 50:00 or 1:45:30

How to use

  1. Choose the mode: finish time to pace, or pace to a projected finish time.
  2. Choose your unit (km or mile) and enter the distance.
  3. Enter your finish time or your target pace.

Frequently asked questions

How is pace calculated?

Pace = finish time ÷ distance, shown as minutes and seconds per km or per mile. Example: 10 km in 50:00 gives 5:00 per km and an average speed of 12 km/h.

How is the projected finish time calculated?

By straight proportion: finish time = pace × distance. A 5:00/km pace over 21.1 km projects to 1:45:30. The projection assumes the same pace throughout — it does not account for fatigue, terrain, heat or race-day crowding.

What do the km and mile options switch?

Both the distance unit and the pace unit together: km mode reads distance in kilometres and shows pace per km with speed in km/h; mile mode reads distance in miles and shows pace per mile with speed in mph. The tool does not silently convert between them.

What time formats can I enter?

Hours-minutes-seconds like 1:45:30 or minutes-seconds like 50:00; bare seconds also work. Minutes and seconds must stay below 60 — the tool reports an error instead of guessing what 5:90 was meant to be.

About this tool

This free pace calculator answers the two questions every runner asks: "what pace was that?" and "what finish time does this pace give me?". Enter a distance and a finish time and you get your pace per kilometre or per mile — switchable with one click — plus your total time in a clean hours-minutes-seconds form and your average speed on top. Run 10 km in 50:00 and the tool shows 5:00 per km at 12 km/h. The other direction is the race-day planner: enter your target pace and a distance, and the expected finish time is projected by straight proportion — a 5:00/km pace over 21.1 km lands at 1:45:30. The unit switch applies to both the distance you enter and the pace you get, so km runners and mile runners each stay in their native units. Times can be typed as H:MM:SS or M:SS, and everything recalculates live as you type, entirely in your browser. One scope note: the projection is pure arithmetic — it does not model fatigue, hills, heat or pacing strategy, so treat long-race estimates as a flat-course baseline.
