PNG to ICO Converter

A real .ico file is not just a renamed PNG — it is a container holding several sizes so Windows can pick the crispest one for every context: 16 px for title bars and tabs, 32 px for desktop and Alt-Tab, 48 px for Explorer and shortcuts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an ICO contain multiple sizes?

Windows displays icons at different sizes in different places. A multi-size ICO lets the system scale down minimally or pick the exact size, keeping edges crisp instead of blurring one large bitmap.

My logo is not square — will it be distorted?

No. The image is scaled uniformly and centered on a transparent square canvas, so nothing is stretched. The icon simply has transparent padding where needed.

Is the conversion done on a server?

No. Rendering and ICO packing both happen in your browser. Your PNG never leaves your device.

Which source format should I use?

PNG is required by this tool and is the right choice anyway: it is lossless and supports the transparency that good icons rely on.

About this tool

A real .ico file is not just a renamed PNG — it is a container holding several sizes so Windows can pick the crispest one for every context: 16 px for title bars and tabs, 32 px for desktop and Alt-Tab, 48 px for Explorer and shortcuts. This converter takes your PNG, fits it centered onto square canvases at all three sizes, packs them into a standards-compliant ICO container, and hands back one downloadable file. Non-square logos are letterboxed with transparency instead of being squashed, so your mark keeps its proportions everywhere it appears. The packing is done byte-by-byte in your browser — no server round-trip, no account, no watermark — which means confidential brand assets and internal tool icons never leave your machine. The preview shows the 48 px rendering so you can check legibility at small sizes before committing. For a full web icon set including apple-touch and PWA icons, continue to the favicon generator.
